Inpaint images
Paint an image mask for selective image editing.
How inpaint mask editing works
Inpaint mode lets you paint or select a mask region on an image while keeping the original image layer in place. The current editor exposes mask editing controls and an apply/cancel flow; it does not include a prompt field or AI generation step inside this mode.
Using inpaint
- Select an image layer on the canvas.
- In the floating inline toolbar, click Inpaint (or open the image tools menu).
- The inpaint mask editor opens. Use the brush, lasso, or eraser tools to mark the area you want to mask.
- Adjust brush size to paint large or detailed areas precisely.
- Click Clear mask to start over if the selection is wrong.
- Click Apply to save the mask to the image layer, or Cancel to leave without applying it.
Getting good results
- Mask only the area that should change. A tight mask makes follow-up edits easier to control.
- Use the eraser to clean up accidental mask strokes before applying.
- Clear the mask when the selected area is wrong and you want to start over.
Tips
- If the masked area is too tight, try slightly expanding it to include some surrounding pixels.
- Mask editing works best on high-resolution source images where edges are easier to paint precisely.
- Undo with ⌘Z to revert to the original image.
