Split image layers
Separate an image into multiple independent layers by subject or region.
What split image layers does
Split image layers uses AI to analyze an image and separate it into multiple independent layers — one per detected subject or region. The result is a set of layers you can move, style, and edit independently without the subjects interfering with each other.
Splitting an image
- Select an image layer on the canvas.
- Open the image tools menu from the floating inline toolbar.
- Choose Split layers.
- If prompted, set the maximum number of output layers.
- Click Run. Lovision adds the split results as new image layers next to the source image and selects the new layers.
After splitting
- Each new layer corresponds to a detected subject, with a transparent background where the other subjects were.
- The original image remains on the canvas unless you delete or hide it.
- Layers are named automatically — rename them in the Layers panel for easier navigation.
- Delete any layers you do not need.
- You can move, resize, and independently style each resulting layer.
Tips
- Images with clearly distinct and well-separated subjects (e.g., product photography on a white background) produce the best split results.
- If subjects are merged together in the output, use the Remove background tool on individual layers to clean up edges.
- The split is non-reversible in one step — if you need to restart, undo (⌘Z) immediately after running the split.
