Add and edit text
Create text layers, enter text edit mode, and apply typography settings.
Adding a text layer
Shortcut: Press T to activate the Text tool.
- Click on the canvas — creates a single-line text layer that grows horizontally as you type (auto-width mode).
- Click and drag — creates a text box with a fixed width. Text wraps within the box and the height grows as you add content.
After placing the layer, type your text. Press Escape to exit text editing and return to the selection tool.
Entering text edit mode
To edit an existing text layer:
- Double-click the text layer on the canvas, or
- Select the layer and press Enter.
In text edit mode, you can select individual characters, words, or ranges to apply formatting to specific text.
Editing text content
In text edit mode:
- Type to insert characters at the cursor position.
- Use Backspace / Delete to remove characters.
- Use ⌘A / Ctrl+A to select all text in the layer.
- Use ⌘C, ⌘V to copy and paste text.
Applying formatting
Select a text range and use the inspector to change:
- Font family, weight, size
- Color
- Bold (⌘B), Italic (⌘I)
- Alignment, line height, paragraph spacing
- Letter spacing, decoration, case
Tips
- Use T + click for single-line labels and button text. Use T + drag for body text that should wrap at a specific width.
- Rename important text layers in the Layers panel — "Headline", "Body copy", "CTA label" is much clearer than "Text 5".
- Press Escape once to exit text editing mode. Press Escape again to deselect the layer.
